The Misunderstood Jew/Facing the Middle East

  • Wisdom House Retreat & Conference Center 229 East Litchfield Road Litchfield, CT, 06759 United States (map)

Presented by Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener

The Misunderstood Jew is the title of a seminal work on the life and context of Jesus of Nazareth by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine.  Dr. Levine is a renowned scholar of Christianity and a practicing, observant Jew. Dr Levine seems to have chosen this somewhat shocking title to challenge both Christians and Jews. She hopes Christians will understand more about the Jewishness of Jesus. And Jews are similarly challenged in her writing, to reclaim the second testament (Christian texts) as a primary text for the history of the second temple period.

Dr Levine is a curious and respectful observer of this important moment in shared history.  Our conversation, too, will be curious and respectful.

Morning session: The Misunderstood Jew

Andrea will review the teachings of Dr. Amy-Jill Levine who is a thought leader in Jewish Christian studies. Dr Levine’s thought-provoking insights challenge Jews and Christians to widen how they see the second temple period, which is so formative for both.  She reclaims the Christian gospels as primary sources for Jewish history. And she illuminates the Jewish milieu of Jesus of Nazareth.

Afternoon session: Facing the Middle East

What can we understand, see and do about the conundrum of the Israel/Palestine conflict?

Andrea traveled repeatedly into the West Bank, Gaza and Israel for over a decade with the Compassionate Listening Project. CLP’s delegations heard from hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds, seeking humanity, empathy and common ground.

Andrea will share a set of frameworks for understanding current events, as we create a space for our questions and concerns to be shared.
