Fear is an integral part of being human and starts early. It’s primal, it’s powerful, and it’s designed to help keep us safe. Our bodies are wired to react instantly—pupils widen, breathing quickens, adrenaline floods in. It’s the ancient survival system that helped our ancestors escape physical dangers. But now, we carry most of what we find threatening in our minds, and for much of the time. We may not be in physical danger, but we still get the same flood of fear over numerous things – fear of what others think, fear of speaking in public, fear of being rejected, fear of getting sick, even scrolling through the news these days will do it. Simply put, our fears define our limitations. But facing our fears is how we grow.
In this workshop, Facing Your Fears, we will explore strategies for facing our fears with Jason Laramore, who will share his experience as a combat veteran in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following the military, Jason spent three brutal years working as a deckhand in the unforgiving waters of Alaska. The physical grind was relentless, but the weight of his past was heavier. In 2015, years of accumulated pain and trauma came to a breaking point, and Jason reached a moment where his life could have ended, a crossroads born of despair and exhaustion. Yet what felt like the end became, with courage and understanding, a transformation of his fears into positive, life-affirming change.
